You're getting ready for your baby's first professional photo session.
Your diaper bag is packed, you've checked it three times, and you're wondering whether you need extra blankets, outfits, props, pacifiers, or approximately half of your nursery.
The good news? You probably need much less than you think!
As a newborn photographer with over 12 years of experience, I've designed my Mundelein studio sessions to take much of the preparation off parents' shoulders.
Here's a simple guide to what you actually need for your baby's portraits.
For studio newborn sessions at Milamemories Photography, I provide the photography wraps, newborn outfits, headbands, accessories, and styled props used during your session.
You don't need to go shopping for specialty newborn photography outfits or bring your own baskets and backgrounds.
Before your appointment, we'll plan the styling and setups available with your selected collection.
That means you can spend less time packing and more time focusing on your baby.
Here are the essentials I recommend bringing:
Diapers and wipes: Bring enough for your appointment and a few extras.
Milk or feeding supplies: Whatever you normally need for breastfeeding, pumping, or bottle-feeding.
An extra baby outfit: Just in case there's a diaper surprise on the way.
Burp cloths: Always useful during these early weeks.
A pacifier, if your baby already uses one: It may be helpful for soothing, but there is no need to introduce one specifically for photographs.
Comfortable clothes for parents: Especially helpful during a longer session.
A sentimental item, if desired: Let me know ahead of time if you'd like to include a meaningful blanket or keepsake so we can discuss how to incorporate it safely.
That's it! No giant suitcase of newborn props required.
This is one of the most common questions new parents ask.
My advice is to follow your baby's normal feeding needs rather than trying to force a particular schedule just for photographs.
Some babies arrive ready to sleep. Others need a feeding, a diaper change, or a little time to settle.
That's normal.
Our newborn sessions are baby-led, and feeding or soothing can take place during your appointment. Just keep in mind that each collection has a scheduled session length, so the time available for different setups depends on how your baby is doing.
A sleepy baby can be wonderful to photograph, but an awake baby can give us some lovely expressions too.
Babies cry.
Sometimes they're hungry. Sometimes they need a diaper change. Sometimes they simply want to be held.
A crying baby doesn't mean your newborn photos are ruined.
I work gently and patiently, paying attention to each baby's comfort and readiness for the next photograph.
Safety is always more important than achieving a particular pose. Styled newborn posing is done in the studio with appropriate support and an assistant for spotting where needed.
Not every baby will be comfortable in every position, and that's perfectly fine.
If you've selected a newborn collection that includes parents or siblings, simple and coordinated outfits usually photograph beautifully.
For a timeless look, consider:
Cream, ivory, beige, or other soft neutrals.
Solid colors rather than large logos or busy patterns.
Comfortable outfits for young siblings.
Clothing that fits well and doesn't require constant adjustments.
You do not all need to wear the exact same color.
The goal is for your family to look coordinated while keeping the attention on your new baby and the connection between everyone.
If your newborn session includes family and sibling portraits, try to arrange transportation so older children don't have to stay for the entire appointment.
At Milamemories Photography, we typically photograph parents and siblings first.
After that portion is finished, one parent or another adult can take the older children home, back to school, or out for a little treat while we continue with baby-only portraits.
This can make a big difference for toddlers and preschoolers who aren't thrilled about sitting quietly through a longer session.
Don't assume you've missed your chance.
While the first 7–14 days are generally our preferred window for traditional newborn portraits, older babies are welcome too.
We simply adjust posing and expectations based on your baby's age, comfort, and how they're doing during the appointment.
If your baby has already arrived, reach out with their birth date so we can discuss suitable options.
Our newborn photography studio is located in Mundelein, Illinois, serving families from Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Lake Forest, the North Shore, Chicago, and surrounding communities.
We offer different newborn collections, including shorter wrapped sessions and longer experiences with parent and sibling portraits.
You can explore our Newborn Photography Collections to see which option best fits your family.
I recommend reaching out during pregnancy so we can plan around your estimated due date. Once your little one arrives, we'll confirm the actual appointment based on their birth date and availability.
And if you're reading this while holding a newborn in one arm and packing a diaper bag with the other, here's your reminder:
You don't need to have everything perfectly organized before your baby's first portraits.
Just bring your baby, the essentials, and yourselves.
I'll take care of the photography details.
