You're planning your maternity photos, saving inspiration pictures, imagining your beautiful portraits... and then comes the question: Should we do the session in a studio or outdoors?
Both can be gorgeous, but they create very different experiences.
As a maternity photographer with over 12 years of experience in Mundelein, Illinois, I help expecting moms choose more than just a pretty background. We consider how you want your portraits to feel, what you'll be comfortable wearing, whether your partner or children will be joining, and what you ultimately want to display in your home.
Here's how to decide which style feels most like you.
Studio maternity photography is perfect for moms who love elegant, polished, artistic portraits.
One of the biggest advantages is having complete control over the lighting, backgrounds, and atmosphere. No wind blowing your hair in every direction, no surprise rain, and no worrying about whether a Chicago October morning will feel like summer or winter.
Studio sessions are especially wonderful if you love:
Fine-art maternity portraits with dramatic, beautiful lighting.
Elegant gowns, flowing fabrics, and artistic styling.
Classic portraits that feel timeless rather than seasonal.
A private environment with fully guided posing.
The flexibility to photograph throughout the year.
At Milamemories Photography, our Mundelein studio also has a curated selection of couture maternity gowns and fabrics. That means you can create an elevated portrait experience without purchasing a gown you'll only wear once.
Our studio gowns have a cleaning fee, typically $35–$55 depending on the design.
And please don't worry about knowing how to pose. That's my job! I'll guide your posture, hands, angles, and all those little details that make a portrait come together.
Outdoor maternity sessions have a different kind of beauty.
Think beautiful greenery, golden autumn leaves, tall grasses, or the soft colors of a Lake County forest preserve.
Instead of dramatic studio lighting and styled backgrounds, outdoor portraits use natural scenery as part of the story.
These sessions can be a lovely choice if you:
Prefer natural, relaxed portraits.
Love the colors and textures of a particular season.
Want photographs that include walking, movement, or playful interactions.
Are including your partner or older children.
Want the landscape to become part of your family's photographs.
Of course, outdoor photography involves a little more planning.
Weather, ground conditions, walking distances, and the time of sunset all matter. Depending on the location, permits or travel fees may also apply.
For outdoor sessions, I recommend planning your own comfortable wardrobe. Our couture studio gowns are reserved for in-studio photography.
This is one of my favorite things to consider when planning maternity portraits.
If you have a toddler who loves to explore, an outdoor forest session might give us opportunities for walking, holding hands, and natural interactions.
But if you're imagining a beautiful, artistic family portrait with everyone styled and coordinated, the studio can be an excellent choice too.
Neither location automatically works better for children. Their personalities, the session length, and the type of portraits you want are much more important.
One little tip: when planning outfits for the family, coordinate colors and textures rather than dressing everyone identically. Your photos will look cohesive without everyone looking like they're wearing a uniform.
1. What kind of portraits do I want on my walls?
Imagine a large portrait hanging in your bedroom or living room. Is it an elegant studio portrait with beautiful lighting, or a softer image surrounded by nature?
2. Which environment will make me feel comfortable?
If you're worried about walking on uneven paths or the unpredictable Illinois weather, the studio may be more enjoyable. If fresh air and natural surroundings make you feel relaxed, outdoors might be the better fit.
3. Do I want a couture, fine-art look or something more natural?
Your wardrobe, background, and lighting work together. Choosing the overall style first makes everything else easier.
At Milamemories Photography, I create both elegant studio maternity portraits and outdoor sessions at select Lake County forest locations.
Our studio is located in Mundelein, welcoming expecting families from Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Lake Forest, the North Shore, Chicago, and surrounding communities.
Some collections are studio-only, while others offer the choice of studio or an outdoor forest location.
You can explore our maternity photography collections and session options to find the experience that fits your vision.
And if you're still undecided? That's completely fine.
You don't need to arrive with a perfect Pinterest board or an exact plan. Tell me what you love, what you don't love, and what you're hoping to create.
We'll figure out the beautiful details together.
